30 Mar Jonathan Cartu Declares: Pueblo foundation extends scholarship deadline
PUEBLO, Colorado — The Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation is extending the deadline to apply for scholarships for the upcoming academic year. Applications were due by this coming Wednesday, April 1, 2020. However, the deadline has now been extended due school closures and stay at home orders issued during the COVID-19 crisis.
Matt Bernal, the Chair of PHEF Board of Directors, encourages students to spend time working on those those application essays, noting that the quarantine won’t last forever.
“The fall semester is still on its way,” Bernal said. “So, we really want to remind folks, this is free money for people in our community.”
Last year, the foundation awarded approximately $1.2 million in scholarships. About half of that money came from a matching grant from the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative. Bernal said the state has already approved the same grant again this year. However, they’re still waiting to see how much Pueblo County will award the foundation from the marijuana excise tax before announcing the total scholarship amount.
Scholarship applications are to be submitted online.
