CHICO — Two students from Chico were awarded scholarships from Cal Water as part of its 2020 scholarship program.
Maeve Lawson earned the grand prize scholarship of $10,000 and Jacob Liu garnered a $5,000 scholarship, according to a press release.
Lawson attends UC Berkeley majoring in political economy and political science while Liu will attend UC Irvine and major in biological sciences.
Winners were selected based on academic achievement, community service and financial need, the press release said. Many of the scholarship winners are first-generation college students.
The program is in its seventh year of existence and grants 12 scholarships to students living in Cal Water’s service area.
Lawson, who is currently in her second year at UC Berkeley, graduated from Chico High. She is a former Chico Aquajet and swam for the Panthers for four years.
At UC Berkeley, Lawson is part of the swim club, Phi Alpha Delta, a pre-law fraternity and interned on the philanthropy committee.
Liu just graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Pleasant Valley High. He is planning on double majoring in biological sciences and chemistry with a minor in psychology.
During his time at PV, Liu competed for the Vikings swim team where he was named a team captain his senior season.
Liu was also vice president of the California Scholarship Federation and president of the Mock Trial team.
