Congressman Donald M. Payne Sr. Torchbearer Education Award…

EAST ORANGE, NJ — At the annual East Orange Education Foundation (EOEF) Congressman Donald M. Payne, Sr., Torchbearer for Education Award Luncheon Ceremony, held Saturday, October 19, at the Hanover Manor, East Hanover, N.J. the East Orange Education Foundation, Inc. (EOEF) received an unexpected, but very welcomed act of philanthropy from one of its distinguished honorees. The event honored seven outstanding educators. Dr. Lenworth Gunther, placed an altruistic exclamation point on what he described as his “profound commitment to excellence in education” by announcing a $10,000.00 donation to the EOEF from he and his wife Maria, a retired 33 – year middle school and Head Start veteran, in the New York City School System.

The EOEF presented Dr. Gunther with the “Torchbearer for Education Award” in recognition of his  trailblazing 38 plus – year career as an educator and distinguished scholar and history professor at Essex County Community College. To everyones sheer delight, Dr. Gunther took his fellow honorees: James Gay, a retired music teacher, Larry Harrison, retired teacher, Ralph Jacob, Jr., retired principal, distinguished retired professor and scholar, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Principal Baruti Kafele, and Dr. Kevin West, Superintendent, East Orange School District by complete surprise with this most timely announcement.

“We are happy to financially support the East Orange Education Foundation’s scholarships and volunteer programs that complement the work of the school district’s tireless parents and educators as they prepare East Orange youths to succeed now and in the future workaday world,” Dr. Lenworth Gunther stated.

“Words can’t describe our gratitude for Dr. Lenworth Gunther’s act of altruism. The impact of this extraordinary $10,000 donation is incalculable. It is the largest donation, to date, in the history of the East Orange Education Foundation. Most importantly, however, it will serve to provide much-needed financial support to affirm our mission  in support of innovative teaching programs in the East Orange School District and to provide scholarships to college-bound East Orange School District High School Alumni. We are truly blessed and thankful for Dr. Lenworth and Mrs. Maria Gunther’s act of support with this most generous contribution,” Goldie T. Burbage, President of the East Orange Education Foundation stated.
